If bravery shaped reality, Zimbabwe would be starting a new era. In the face of thuggery and in defiance of years of state intimidation, the country‘s opposition has swept the election board. But it would be premature to celebrate the political demise - and foolish to underestimate the resolve - of the 84-year-old Robert Mugabe, the man who has led Zimbabwe from independence in 1980 and who has since delivered it into the abyss.

World Bank denies Kibaki bias

The World Bank was yesterday struggling to reaffirm its neutrality in Kenya following the leaking of confidential memos that provide an account of the country's post election crisis that appears to favour Mwai Kibaki, the president. The World Bank has a portfolio of projects in Kenya amounting to at least $1bn, and is the most influential of the multilateral agencies in anchoring donor support.

A confidential memo from the World Bank's Kenya office that supports President Mwai Kibaki's claim of victory in the country's disputed elections plunged the Washington-based lender into controversy on Wednesday. The memo claims that "the considered view of the UN is that the Electoral Commision of Kenya announcement of a Kibaki win is correct".
